मणिपुर पर कविता जोशी की दो वृतचित्र फिल्मों का प्रदर्शन

दून लाइब्रेरी एंड रिसर्च सेंटर में शनिवार, 3 जून, 2023 की शाम को कविता जोशी की दो फिल्में ‘टेल्स फ्रॉम द मार्जिन्स’ और ‘सम रूट्स ग्रो अपवर्ड्स’ का प्रदर्शन पुस्तकालय एवं शोध केंद्र के सभागार में किया गया। दून के फ़िल्म प्रेमियों, रंगमंच से जुड़े कलाकारों, पुस्तकालय के युवा पाठक सदस्यों व अन्य लोग इस अवसर पर मौजूद रहे। कुल पिचहत्तर मिनट की अवधि की इन फ़िल्मों के प्रदर्शन के बाद फ़िल्म निर्देशक शाश्वती तालुकदार ने फ़िल्म के विषयवस्तु पर विस्तार से चर्चा की। इस दौरान सभागार में मौजूद दर्शकों ने इन फिल्मों से जुड़े सवाल-जवाब भी किये।
टेल्स फ्रॉम द मार्जिन्स
दरअसल यह फ़िल्म मणिपुर की सड़कों पर सार्वजनिक रूप से प्रदर्शन विरोध कर रही स्त्रियों की कहानी बयां करती है। 6 सालों से अधिक समय से एक युवती न्याय की मांग को लेकर आमरण अनशन पर बैठी है जिसे गिरफ़्तार करके रखा जाता है और जबरन उन्हें कई तरह से प्रताड़ित किया जाता है
टेल्स फ्रॉम द मार्जिन्स फ़िल्म न्याय की मांग के लिए संघर्षरत मणिपुरी स्त्रियों के असाधारण विरोध का एक दस्तावेज है जिसके लिए यह फ़िल्म भारत के इस सुदूरवर्ती इलाके की यात्रा करती है। सही मायने में यह फ़िल्म इनके संघर्षमय जीवन के जरिये एक वृहत मानवीय त्रासदी पर लोगों का ध्यान केंद्रित करने का प्रयास करती है।
सम रूट्स ग्रो अपवर्ड्स
इस फ़िल्म की शूटिंग मणिपुर के इम्फाल शहर में हुई है, जो हिंसा और उग्रवाद से प्रभावित है। फ़िल्म की पृष्ठभूमि सुपरिचित रंगमंच निर्देशक रत्तन थियाम के काम की पड़ताल करती है।
पिछले 25 से अधिक सालों से रत्तन थियाम एक ऐसा थिएटर बना रहे हैं जो दिखने में उतना ही सम्मोहक है जितना कि बौद्धिक रूप से उत्तेजक है। उनका थिएटर उनके गृह राज्य मणिपुर की पारंपरिक प्रदर्शन कलाओं से युक्त है। एक ओर उनके सौंदर्य संबंधी प्रभाव पारंपरिक दिखा हैं, वहीं उनकी चिंताएं बेहद आधुनिक हैं।
उनके नाटक इस क्षेत्र में व्याप्त सामाजिक-राजनीतिक संकट, युवा अशांति, युद्ध और हिंसा को प्रतिबिंबित करते हैं।
कविता जोशी एक परिचय
कविता जोशी एक स्वतंत्र फिल्म निर्माता और मीडिया ट्रेनर हैं। ये एफटीआईआई पुणे से प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त हैं। उनकी फिल्मों ने मुख्य रूप से मणिपुर में न्याय के लिए संघर्षरत स्त्रियों के विरोध को उजागर करने का प्रयास किया है। उनके कार्य को देश विदेशों में अनेक सम्मान मिले हैं। उनकी फिल्में दुनिया भर के प्रसिद्ध फिल्म समारोहों में प्रदर्शित हुई हैं। कविता जोशी फिल्म निर्माण की कई कार्यशालाएँ आयोजित कर रही हैं। इन कार्यशालाओं में 50 से अधिक लघु फिल्मों और वृत्तचित्रों का निर्माण हुआ है। कविता इंटरनेशनल एसोसिएशन ऑफ वीमेन इन रेडियो एंड टेलीविज़न (IAWRT) की सदस्य हैं। वे इसके शुरुआत में एशियाई महिला फिल्म महोत्सव की क्यूरेटर में से एक थीं। राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों व विभिन्न फिल्म समारोहों के निर्णायक मंडल में भी वे रही हैं।

KAVITA JOSHI is an independent filmmaker and media trainer; and an alumna of FTII Pune. Her films have primarily focused on women’s protests for justice in context of the conflict in Manipur. Her work has received several awards in India and abroad, and screened at noted film festivals worldwide.
As a media trainer and teacher, Kavita has been conducting workshops in filmmaking for over 18 years. Over 50 short films and documentaries have been produced in her workshops, and have shown at film festivals in India and abroad.
Kavita is a member of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT), and was one of the curators of their Asian Women’s Film Festival in its early editions. She has also served on the jury of various film festivals, including the National Film Awards; the NSFA, India; Jeevika Film Festival; and others. Kavita is based in New Delhi and is inordinately fond of cats and crime fiction.

TALES FROM THE MARGIN :: Twelve women disrobe publicly on the streets of Manipur, in protest… For over 6 years a young woman has been on a fast-to-death demanding justice; she is kept under arrest and is forcibly nose-fed. Why are the women of Manipur using their bodies their battlefield?
Manipur is a state in India’s North-East region, riven for decades by insurgency and violence. The Indian government has attempted to crush the insurgency through its military might; shielded by undemocratic laws. Yet, little is heard about Manipur and its troubles across the nation’s landscape. This is a place that mainland India has marginalised; that the world has forgotten.
‘Tales from the Margins’ travels to this remote, strife-torn corner of India to document the extraordinary protests of Manipuri women for justice. And through their lives, to focus on a vast human tragedy.
SOME ROOTS GROW UPWARDS :: Some Roots Grow Upwards is shot in the city of Imphal in Manipur, a region ravaged by violence and insurgency. Against this backdrop, it explores the work of acclaimed theatre director Ratan Thiyam.
For over 25 years now, Ratan Thiyam has been creating a theatre that is as visually compelling as it is intellectually stimulating. His theatre is steeped in the traditional performing arts of his home state, Manipur. But while his aesthetic influences are traditional, his concerns are intensely modern. His plays reflect upon the socio-political crisis gripping the region, the youth unrest, war and violence; at the same time, they also dwell on the larger human condition.
The film seeks insights into the art of Thiyam – in portraits of the city where he works, in the quiet beauty of the terrain, in the violent riots that tore the land apart, in the living traditions that come alive at festive time…
