A research Centre devoted to studies on the Himalayan area of the country in general, and Uttarakhand in particular, from the perspective of social sciences and humanities is also being developed. In fact, the idea is to build a research Centre around the library so that it becomes a Centre of intellectual and academic activity in the region.

The research activities of the Centre are planned in a variety of ways:

  • By the core research staff of the Centre
  • By Short-term research staff (Visiting Fellows) on fellowships provided by the Centre for durations ranging from 3 months to 2 years.
  • By visiting scholars from Indian and foreign universities, pursuing research on Himalayas and availing the facilities of the Centre.

The Centre also organizes seminars, lectures and discussion on regular basis on the topics and themes related to its focus areas and on various topical issues. In addition, two flagship activities are envisaged every year: a national seminar on a subject related to the Himalayas from a social science or humanities perspective, and a lecture by an eminent scholars or person on a similar theme.

So far three vary successful international seminars have been organized. Proceedings of these seminars have also been published.

  • Water Himalaya: Past, Present and Future, Dehradun (March 23-26, 2018)
  • Endangered Languages of Central & Western Himalaya, Almora (October 11-14, 2018)
